How to Connect a DJ Controller to an External Mixer
Need to learn how to connect a DJ controller to an external mixer? This page will help you do so. For starters, you will need each of the following:
- DJ controller with master output (RCA, 1/4", XLR, and so on).
- External Mixer with input connections.
- Cables to connect the mixer to the controller.
New and emerging DJs are usually not aware that many venues force you to connect your DJ controller with an external mixer. Especially for venues that have their own PA systems ready for to you to use.
How to Connect a DJ Controller to an External Mixer: 3 Easy Steps
Have a gig coming up where you need to learn how to connect a DJ controller to an external mixer? Below, we will break down how this is done in 3 easy steps.
Step 1: Connect Cables to Controller Output
The first step is to connect your cables to the DJ controller. In the above example, we can see the Pioneer DDJ-SX3. This model has two master outputs. Although technically you could use the booth output, it's generally best to stick with the master output. You only need to connect to one output channel. In the example above you could choose to connect with XLR cords or RCA cords.
Step 2: Connect Other End of Cables to the Mixer
On your external mixer, there should be at least one line input for you to plug in the other end of your cables. Note that you might need an adapter to connect different types of connections (RCA to 1/4", XLR to RCA, etc.). The above picture shows the Numark M2 Mixer.
Step 3: Final Sound Checks & Preparations
Once you have your cables connected to both your controller master output and the external mixer's line input, you are to go ahead and do your soundcheck. Make sure that the external mixer has both the master volume and channel volume turned up. If you are plugged into line input channel 1, you need to turn up the volume for channel 1.
Final Tips for Sound Check:
- Use Line Input, Not Phono: Make sure you use the line input on the external mixer as phono will sound terrible when used to connect a DJ controller. Phono jacks are slightly different in nature from Line/CD inputs and are commonly used to connect turntables.
- Controller Output Volume: Be sure to set your controller's output up as high as you can without clipping the sound. This way, you can use the main output levels from the external mixer in order to further fine-tune the sound output.
- Using External Audio Interface: If you are using a separate audio interface (or sound card) you will likely need to first connect your controller to the audio interface. Once connected to the interface, connect the sound card to the external mixer in the same manner described above.
